Vote with your feet
I refer to Mahathir Mohamad's recent interview on BBC's Talking Point where he responded
that the Malays also feel second-class to the Chinese's second-class status due to the NEP. My response to him is that I am not only insulted but now convinced he deserves to be ultimately labeled as a racist and an ultra ultimately.
Other than the fact the lies about the Malays being second-class citizens as pointed out by YSM , the most maddening part of the comment is his glib response to a very real issue. It ultimately reveals that he cares for the non-bumiputera only so far as he can get their votes not their real concerns and rights.
He obviously feels he has the right to decide who gets what and what is right no matter what the rules of fairness and justice are. In other words, so long as the non-bumiputera are not starving and causing a nuisance, then they deserved to be exploited regardless of their contribution and effort.
The real issue is that the non-bumiputera are discriminated against, not just unfavoured. We are not talking about government contracts or licences. In education, they cannot get the education they want both in quality and fields despite qualification and hard work. The fake meritocractic system, the freedom of Chinese schools to plan their curriculum etc, not just does not help, but work against them.
In business and work, they are forced to give up the fruits of their labour not as taxes for the uplifting of the unfortunate but subsidies to those undeserving. The bumiputra share allocation, the various concessions like toll roads, bank cards etc, given out to cronies are just plain subsidies to the undeserving. It is simply exploitation matched only by South Africa's apartheid.
My real question to everyone is if you are a second-class citizen in Malaysia, why bother to stay? You can be second-class just about anywhere else. In fact, you are better off in starving Africa or chaotic Eastern Europe then in Malaysia because at least you do not get discriminated against.
You may not vote or be given government contracts but at least your children can get a fair and decent quality education and if you set up a business, you do not have to give part of it away to get things done.
In Singapore, China, India and even Russia, you can at least have a choice of what you want to study and become good at what you do after which the entire world is open to you. The fact is there is many more places in the world that may not treat you well but they are not out to exploit you. One million already has discovered this, a few more million will too and the economy should implode.
