TELUK INTAN BN candidate for the Teluk Intan by-election Mah Siew Keong has said that he cannot be held accountable for the promises made by ministers in his absence.

Commenting on the slew of pledges made by BN ministers in the ongoing campaign period, the Gerakan president said: "I wasn't there. Those were their promises. Not mine."

"They (the promises) are not in my manifesto. I only put what I think I can do, as a MP," he added.

However, Mah said if the BN was wrong to make election promises, then Pakatan Rakyat had also erred in doing the same during the last general election.

"Pakatan said if they won, they will lower petrol price. What about that? Is that not the same?" he asked.

Among the promises made by BN ministers in the course of the campaign are:
  • Improved broadband Internet connections;
  • A crematorium and a hall for wedding receptions for the Indian community;
  • Getting the Teluk Intan leaning tower listed as a Unesco heritage site (above, left); and
  • Uniforms for members of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela).
Mah was speaking to reporters after launching his manifesto for the by-election this morning.

His manifesto includes the promise to build more WiFi Internet hotspot zones in Teluk Intan.

The veteran politician faces DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud in a straight fight for the parliamentary seat, for which voting will be on Saturday.

The seat fell vacant following the death of DAP's Seah Leong Peng on May 1.
