As a journalist in the French magazine l'Arche, I thank malaysiakini for linking the full text of Dr Mahathir Mohamad's speech, which included his survey of Islamic history, and of course his remarks concerning the Jews.

He is right when he described the decline of the Muslim countries under the Ottoman Empire rule, which was bypassed by the Industrial Revolution. He should also add that today many Muslim countries are also being deprived of the Internet and the forthcoming bio-informatic revolutions because of their autocratic systems of government.

On the other hand, Dr Mahathir's speech is wrong on two scores.

First, the fact that he consider all Jews, and not just the state of Israel, as the "enemies". Such words will only drive hate and racism, and this is why, this year, some of my Jewish patients - all poor people immigrated from North Africa - were attacked in the street of Bobigny by young Muslims and were sent to the hospital.

The other mistake in Dr Mahathir's speech is that he believed the Jews rule the world. On the very day of his speech, China sent its first astronaut. Take a tour to Paris, Budapest or Madrid: these cities are quickly changing into an Asiatic world. Very soon, these Chinese families, who are a diaspora, and who work hard and who think even better, will rule the world.
