BUKIT GELUGOR Independent candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan has “forgiven” Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for the injuries allegedly sustained when he threw himself in front of Lim’s official car.
Abu Backer said he still respected the chief minister despite Tuesday’s incident and wanted to work with him to solve the concerns of the Penang people.
As such, he said he has decided he would not be suing Lim and is still keen on meeting with him, even if for just two minutes.
“At that time, I was angry. But after reflecting, I remembered that Nabi Muhammad is forgiving. So I forgive him (Lim) and respect him as my chief minister,” he said when met by Malaysiakini yesterday.
On Tuesday, in a desperate bid to meet with the chief minister, Abu Backer threw himself in front of Lim’s Mercedes Benz to prevent it exiting the state assembly complex.
This came after he had earlier waited fruitlessly for an hour-and-a-half in front of the building, but was unable to meet with Lim.
Abu Backer later claimed to have sustained a fractured pelvis, broken rib and lung infection after the incident.
He then said he planned to sue Lim as he claimed he would not have had to throw himself in front of the car if Lim had met with him.
No broken bones
However, yesterday he denied that he intentionally tried to knock into the vehicle.
“I planned to jump and climb onto the car but mis-stepped as the car was reversing.
“To those who said I knocked into the car, in actual fact, I sprained my leg and fell towards the car. Coincidentally, the car then moved forward. It hit my ribs and I laid on the ground,” he said.
Abu Backer also claimed that doctors at Penang Hospital wanted to operate on him to treat his broken ribs and fracture on his hip, but added that he wanted to get a second opinion.
He was transferred to Hospital Loh Guan Lye on Wednesday and underwent a second MRI and CT scan. The doctors there, he said, determined his bones were not broken but just swollen and bruised.
He further denied the whole incident was an act to garner publicity, saying he genuinely wanted to meet with the state’s leader.
“What’s the point of acting? Surely, I do not want to allow others to insult me.
“I just wanted to meet with Lim. What is wrong with him meeting me? I am just one person, surely, he isn’t scared to meet me?,” Abu Backer asked.
