BUKIT GELUGOR The action by Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan who caused a commotion in front of the Penang state assembly building did not violate the Elections Act 1954.

Election Commission (EC) secretary Abdul Ghani Salleh described the action of the independent candidate as part and parcel of the election campaign.

“We cannot revoke him as a candidate because he already paid the deposit. Once you have become a candidate, you cannot withdraw,” he told reporters after monitoring early voting at Air Itam Police Station in George Town today.

Earlier, Abu Backer Sidek went to the Penang state assembly building to send an invitation letter to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to attend his rally on hudud law in Farlim, Air Itam on May 23.

A group of security guards on duty prevented the candidate from meeting with Lim who was leaving the building with his aide in a car.

Frustrated, Abu Backer Sidek rushed at the moving car and ‘collapsed’ onto the road.

Penang Police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi said he had not received any police report on the incident.
