TELUK INTAN DAP candidate for the Teluk Intan by-election Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud has squashed allegations that her mother Yammy Samat was a Perkasa leader.
"She was not even a (Perkasa) member, how can she be a leader then?" Dyana Sofya asked during a press conference after launching the Pakatan Rakyat by-election operations centre at Pekan Baru today.
Dyana was responding to a report by The Star, quoting Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali, as claiming that Yammy was the first Wanita chief of the Malay rights group.
Dyana further explained that although never a member, her mother only used to be with Perkasa members as most of them were from Semangat 46, an Umno splinter party.
"As far as I'm aware, she left the group before Perkasa's first annual general meeting was held," added Dyana.
Asked why Yammy left, Dyana replied:"I have no idea, you better contact her personally."
However, Yammy, who has been with Dyana on her campaign trail since her candidacy was announced last week, was not seen today.
On the Internet
It was also reported that a photograph of Dyana at an event with Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali was circulating on the Internet.
It shows a smiling Ibrahim standing between Dyana and Yammy at a dinner to celebrate Umno veteran leader Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah being awarded an honorary doctorate by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
Circulated on Facebook by those who seem to be unaffiliated to political parties, the picture has led some to question Dyana's ties with Ibrahim, who is often condemned by the DAP for his right-wing views and racial politics.
Dyana had earlier reiterated that posing for photographs with Ibrahim did not mean that she agreed with his extreme views.
