I concur with Edmund Burke Fan that in all the things Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has done, nothing compares to the way he treated his friend and the manner in which he humiliated his former deputy Anwar Ibrahim by sacking him from Umno and the government.

If Anwar was his friend, God help his enemies. If all the accusations against Anwar are true - that he was a sodomiser, a traitor, a CIA agent and a womaniser - then Mahathir and all his cohorts would be able to sleep peacefully at night with a clear conscience, knowing that they truly did the right thing before God and for the country.

However, if in Mahathir's heart, he knows that all the accusations and injustice heaped upon this one man are untrue, then he will forever be haunted and will never have a night's peaceful sleep till the day he dies.

Many an evil deed is done for the sake of the party or the nation, but if it includes humiliating a party member - even if you disagree with his habits or lifestyle - then the party has nothing but shame and dishonour in its hands.

I have also heard that this friend Anwar saved Mahathir from the brink of losing his position when Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah challenged Mahathir.

Anwar stood firm in his loyalty to Mahathir, and years later this was how Mahathir has repaid him. Perhaps other Umno members or ex-Umno members who are malaysiakini readers could shed some light as to what actually transpired.

I do not believe a man's conscience can go to an extent that he shows no mercy to a man he once called a friend.

This supposed friend has asked the government for bail so that he can seek medical treatment of his choice. Anwar is now in pain and near paralysis and yet Mahathir refuses to sanction the bail application - oh yes, he does not interfere in the day-to-day workings of the judiciary!
