This is in response to Adek (Where the cops are... and aren't). Reading about what happened to your friend (and you) made my blood boil.

I think the best move would be for your friend to write an official complaint to the IGP with a copy to the embassy of her country. Under no circumstances must she allow this abhorrent incident to pass without making a great deal of fuss!

I was a victim of police harassment myself. After the incident, I prepared a statutory declaration and sent it to the CPO in place of a police report (I was denied from making one). I even got a prominent member of a Barisan Nasional party to intervene on my behalf.

What happened after that? First I received a phone call from the CPO himself, then I received a form letter from an investigating officer telling me that investigations were under way. Some weeks later, the same officer called me to say that action had been taken. What this action was could not be disclosed, even though I tried asking. There was no letter of apology from the police.

End of story.

I was initially hesitant to file an official complaint against the policemen who harassed me. I was afraid that they would get my name and address and then cause me more trouble. In the end, my conscience, my sense of justice and my anger overcame my fears and I went ahead with the complaint. I'm glad I did. For what it was worth, at least I said my piece.
