The DAP warned its ally PAS today that it will fall into Umno’s trap if Umno is willing to help PAS implement hudud. The break-up of Pakatan Rakyat, which is Umno's great desire, will also be at risk, the DAP further warned.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said that the trap has been set by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom (left) in Parliament, with his declaration that Umno was willing to help PAS implement hudud.

If PAS fell into Umno's trap, Lim said, it would move on to face other risks, including betraying non-Muslim voters who had supported and trusted PAS in the 2013 general election.

Lim said PAS also risked losing Kelantan, in the same way that it lost Terengganu in the 2004 general election, after passing the hudud enactment in that state in 2003.

"PAS risks losing all the seats it won with non-Muslim support outside the states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah," stressed Lim, who is also Penang chief minister.

He was referring to the current controversy surrounding PAS' insistence in tabling a Private Member's Bill in Parliament to provide for the implementation of the Islamic criminal punishment in Kelantan.

Gerakan plans legal action against PAS

Gerakan has moved to initiate legal action against PAS if it goes ahead with its decision to table the Bill , which will help Kelantan address the legal hurdles the the state currently has been facing in its bid to implement hudud.

Although Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has said the country was not prepared for the hudud, he is nevertheless willing to meet PAS on the matter.

DAP has accused Najib of "flip-flopping" on the matter as the prime minister had on Sept 29, 2011, stated his objection to hudud.

The DAP is also battling another controversy where PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the party had in 2011 agreed to the implementation of hudud in 2011.

Lim insisted that Hadi (left) was wrong in his claim that DAP and Pakatan had agreed to the implementation of hudud.

Lim urged Hadi to read in full the public statement by Pakatan in 2011, which clearly stated DAP’s differences with PAS and its opposition to hudud.

"DAP leaders will actively engage with PAS leaders to emphasise that DAP never agreed to the hudud enactments passed by PAS in Kelantan and Terengganu, before and after the establishment of Pakatan in 2008," Lim said.

He said DAP wants to reaffirm the party’s "consistent and unchanged" opposition to the implementation of hudud on Muslims by PAS, Umno or any other party in Kelantan or Terengganu.

Hudud goes against Merdeka spirit

DAP opposes hudud on grounds that it is "unconstitutional and contrary" to the 1957 Merdeka spirit and context in a multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural society.

"The basis of co-operation in Pakatan is that full consensus by all three parties -  DAP, PAS and PKR  - is required before an issue becomes the coalition's policy," Lim said.

"The implementation of hudud is PAS policy, not Pakatan's, because DAP never agreed to its implementation."

Lim (right) said that in the party's engagement with PAS, the rationale for or against the implementation of hudud would not be discussed because this has been articulated at length in the past by DAP.

"Instead, DAP will urge PAS leaders to consider fully the political consequences of trusting Umno to support the implementation of hudud, which the Malay party had previously opposed," he said.

Lim advised all party leaders to issue written statements to avoid further distortions and counter the "conspiracy of lies and falsehoods" by certain mainstream media to destroy the confidence of the rakyat in DAP by saying it agreed to the implementation of hudud in 2011.
