Three leaders to pick DAP's Bukit Gelugor candidate

The selection of the DAP candidate for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat will be decided by a three-man selection committee, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today.
Lim, acting DAP chairperson Tan Kok Wai and senior party leader Lim Kit Siang will be on the committee, Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, said in a statement today.

"Even though priority will be given to the candidate list proposed by the Penang DAP committee, it is the prerogative of the candidate selection committee to consider other candidates proposed," he said.
State panel submits five names
The party's state committee in Penang, headed by Chow Kon Yeow, has proposed five names for selection by the CEC, which met yesterday.
Chow, who is a Penang state executive councillor, said none of the five are elected representatives.
The Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat fell vacant with the death of Karpal Singh in a car crash along the North-South Expressway, near Gua Tempurung in Perak on April 17.
Speculation is rife that Karpal's third son, Ram Karpal Singh, who is a lawyer, will be fielded in the by-election.
Karpal, a prominent lawyer, retained the seat with a thumping majority of 41,778 votes, against MCA's Teh Beng Yeam, in last year's May 5 general election.
The Bukit Gelugor by-election is to be held on May 25, with nominations fixed for May 12.
To date, five parties - DAP, MCA, Parti Cinta Malaysia, a new coalition of 44 BN-friendly Chinese NGOs that calls itself Penang Front Party, and an independent candidate, Yaakob Ibrahim of Jelutong, have declared their intention to contest for the seat which has some 80,000 registered voters.
