The Pakatan Rakyat leadership council never endorsed PAS' move to implement hudud in Kelantan, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has declared in denied reports on this.

Lim said he was "surprised" by the statement reportedly made by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and called on Hadi to explain his statement.

"This is the first time that I have heard that DAP has agreed to the implementation of  hudud by PAS on Muslims in Kelantan.

"Hadi has made an unfortunate mistake and wrong statement. DAP hopes that Hadi can show proof and if he fails to do so, then a correction should be issued," Lim said in a statement yesterday.

He said Pakatan comprises PAS, DAP and PKR and it operates by consensus. This applies to the issue of hudud as well.

"If any one party disagrees, then it is not Pakatan policy.

"PAS' intention to implement the hudud is its own policy and not Pakatan’s policy, because DAP is consistent in opposing the implementation of the hudud," Lim said.

'PAS lost Terengganu after hudud'

Lim also called on PAS to make a "realistic assessment" on its overtures to Umno to push through with hudud.

"Hadi should not forget that he was the Terengganu menteri besar when that state passed its hudud enactment in 2003 and immediately thereafter, lost Terengganu to Umno in the 2004 general election.

"By attempting to work with Umno again in trying to implement hudud on Muslims in Kelantan, will history repeat itself and allow Umno to recapture Kelantan?" Lim asked.

There appeared to have been confusion over what exactly Hadi had said in Kota Bharu, with Malay dailies yesterday reporting the PAS president as having said that "Pakatan is not opposed to hudud" while some Chinese dailies reported that "Pakatan has accepted hudud".

However, Hadi clarified in a Sin Chew report today that he was referring to the 2011 consensus achieved by the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council.

The consensus is essentially an agreement to disagree made by the Pakatan leadership council, which essentially has three points:

(1) The existence of hudud enactments in Kelantan and Terangganu, which were introduced in 1993 and 2003, before the creation of Pakatan Rakyat, are acknowledged;

(2) PAS and PKR respect DAP's opposition to hudud; and

(3) The objective of the three component parties in Pakatan Rakyat is to defeat the BN.

'Hudud a solo agenda for PAS'

Meanwhile, PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar said PAS respects the parties in BN and Pakatan that oppose hudud law based on consttutional grounds, but it was a struggle for the Islamist party that would not be compromised.

In a statement yesterday, Mahfuz (right) also expressed intention for continued cooperation in Pakatan, saying that hudud was a "solo" agenda of PAS.

"The cooperation built (in Pakatan) is based on agreed agendas, which are far many, compared with the sole hudud agenda which is a solo agenda of PAS that has been championed long before the creation of Pakatan Rakyat.

"Therefore, PAS has no reason to become an enemy of its Pakatan partners even if they disagree with PAS on hudud and they have a right not to support the Private Member's Bill (on hudud) that PAS will table in Parliament soon," he said.

Mahfuz said the differences in Pakatan were "too small" compared with the coalition's commitment to bring change to the country.

"Therefore, we agree to disagree on the question of hudud and it will not break the cooperation in Pakatan Rakyat, which is entrusted by the rakyat," he added.
