Padang Serai parliamentarian N Surendran has flayed the police for investigating a statement that the prominent lawyer had issued on the Sodomy II judgment, labelling the probe as "trivial and against procedures."

Even though he is yet to be called in by the police to give any statements, the incumbent PKR vice-president defended the statement he had issued on Apr 18.

Surendran, in his statement last week, had said that the court decision to jail Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to a five-year term, pending appeal to the Federal Court, was against "all common sense".

"There is nothing criminal in criticising the court's judgment," he said today.

"This is an investigation that is trivial and against procedures.

"The police need to be professional and not follow the wishes of Umno Youth and pro-Umno NGOs.

"I stick with my statement made that day," he said in a text message to Malaysiakini.

Malaysiakini chief editor Fathi Aris Omar and Bahasa Malaysia editor Nash Rahman yesterday had their statements recorded by the police regarding Surendran's statement.

Surendran is being probed for alleged sedition and the statements from Malaysiakini editors were taken according to Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
