MCA asked today if DAP still has the "courage" to pursue its amendment to the Selangor Non-Islamic Religions Enactment 1988, which bars non-Muslims in the state from using the world "Allah", among others.
 
The Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) used the enactment to seize 320 copies of the Bible in the Iban language during the raid on the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) premises in Petaling Jaya on Jan 2.
 
The copies were confiscated for containing the word "Allah" to refer to God.
 
Following this, DAP representatives Lau Weng San (Kampung Tunku), Yeo Bee Yin (Damansara Utama) and Rajiv Rishyakaran (Bukit Gasing) had said they would push for changes to the enactment.
 
But the move was then referred to as "only a suggestion" by DAP, while their Pakatan Rakyat colleagues did not agree with the move.
 
"If DAP has no courage to ask for the amendment of this law, it should then stop lying to non-Muslims, since its power is so limited when it comes to religious issues," MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon said in a statement today.
 
Chong was responding to Lau's claim that the state government should be held accountable for the raid and the resulting non-return of the confiscated religious books, as jurisdiction fell under the federal government.
 
"(DAP)'s cowardliness... has led to the encroachment into the rights and interests of non-Muslims," he said.
