Water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) has challenged MCA and anyone who claims to have evidence of illegal water selling to lodge a graft complaint.

Syabas spokesperson Priscilla Alfred Dharan also said that it has lodged a police report against MCA on the matter.

She added that Syabas has also written to MCA to ask for evidence to be supplied within a certain period “before further action can be taken”.

“We would like to stress that the terms of procedures for purchases (by commercial entities) using private tankers have long been in place.

“As such, Syabas sees the claims as baseless and very serious,” she said in a statement.

“Syabas would also encourage all quarters who have evidence of corruption in the sale and purchase of water using private tankers for private or commercial use to lodge a complaint directly with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).”

She also explained that any commercial entity which wants to buy water via a private tanker can do so by visiting their local Syabas office, and providing their own tankers.

Syabas’s charges for industrial users include RM100 per private tanker trip for water quality testing and RM2.07 per litre of water.

This would work out to be from RM110.35 for a tanker with a capacity of five cubic metres or RM141.40 to RM149.68 (capacity of 20 to 24 cubic metres).

Selangor MCA information bureau deputy chief Tan Bok Koon yesterday questioned Syabas and the state government over what it claimed was profiteering by private water tankers.

He also alluded that water rationing was conducted in residential areas to prioritise the selling of water to commercial areas at a high price.

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim today said that MCA use whatever evidence it has to seek action from enforcement agencies instead of crying foul against the state.
