Idris: Improvements on PBS accepted by educators

SENATE Improvements on the school-based assessment (PBS) system will only be made after getting views from 55,000 individuals, including academicians and non-governmental organisations, the senate was told today.
Second Education Minister Idris Jusoh said this was to avoid mistakes being repeated in implementing changes or improvements in any existing system.
He said apart from avoiding burdening the teachers due to the weaknesses of the system, the improvements would ensure the PBS did not deviate from its original objective of emphasising on spiritual and intellectual values as well as being teacher-friendly.
“We understand the burden of the teachers when using the PBS, so from time to time, the ministry will try its best to overcome the weaknesses of the system,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Senator Muhammad Yusof Husin in Kuala Lumpur.
Muhammad Yusof asked if the PBS would be accepted by the teachers, who together with the teachers’ union, had previously questioned it after the improvements.
Idris said the improvements included teachers no longer needing to key in the students’ achievements into an online system, something which had been a major point of criticism. This improvement has now been well accepted by the educators.
“The educators have accepted the improvement as the new PBS is more teacher-friendly and they can now focus more on the process of teaching and learning,” he said.
The PBS is a transformation which shifts the focus on examinations to an education assessment system that is more holistic and was introduced into primary schools in 2011 and secondary schools in 2012.
However, its implementation led to many grouses and protests from teachers, who were burdened with the task of keying-in and recording student assessments into the central computer system.
As a result, last Feb 23, the Education Ministry decided to postpone its implementation for a review to be made.
Subsequently, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the PBS would be resumed on April 1 after improvements had been made, including the replacement of the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination by the Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3), starting this year.
