BN rep: Don't blame Esscom for kidnap

The suggestion to replace Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) director general Mohammad Mentek with a uniformed senior security officer is irrelevant and baseless, according to an assemblyperson.
Mohd Yusof Apdal (BN-Lahad Datu) stressed instead on the importance of strengthening the security agency's administrative structure, in order for the director general to manage it systematically and effectively.
"In my opinion, this is what should be emphasised, so that the government would be compelled to study the structure of Esscom and define the boundary of the director general's authority, besides equipping the agency with the neccessary manpower and assets," he said while debating the motion on the Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri's address at the State Legislative Assembly today.
Mohd Yusop said Esscom should not be faulted for the kidnap incident involving two women at Singamata Adventure Reef Resort, Semporna recently.
The people should instead support and render their cooperation in efforts to safeguard the state's waters, he said.
He also dismissed Sabah opposition chief Lajim Ukin's (PKR-Klias) negative views of Esscom.
Meanwhile, Jaujan Sambakong (BN-Sulabayan) proposed that local resort operators employ their own security guards comprising locals, at their locations.
"They surely can afford it considering that they can earn up to USD1,500 (RM5,000) for a 2D1N package," he said.
In another development, Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who is also state infrastructure development minister, said the ministry had utilised almost 90 per cent of the RM1.49 billion allocated to it in the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).
"From the aspect Of physical development, 53 of the 164 projects approved in the 10MP have been completed," he said when winding up his ministry's debate.
