Bear attacks in Terengganu forest - so be careful

The Terengganu Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department has advised the people against venturing into the permanent forest reserve in the state following two reported attacks by a bear over the past two weeks.

Its director, Yusoff Shariff, said the first case reportedly occurred on March 30 at a rubber plantation bordering the Merchang Forest Reserve and the second in the Gunung Tebu Forest Reserve in Besut last Saturday.
“We placed two traps in Marang but did not snare the animal. The bear may have returned to its habitat in the Merchang Forest Reserve,” Yusoff told Bernama.
On March 30, Asmani Yahya, 60, was badly injured by a bear while tapping rubber with her husband in Kampung Alur Ketitir, near Marang.
Asmani’s husband saved her from the animal. She was rushed to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital and received 30 stitches for wounds in the head, neck and thighs.
Last Saturday, Felda Tenang settler Mohd Sulaiman Jusof, 58, was badly injured after he was attacked by a bear while looking for the ‘kerdas’ bean in the jungle.
He received 22 stitches for wounds at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian.
Yusoff said that as the attacks had taken place close to or in the permanent forest reserve, he advised the people against venturing deep into the jungle.
He also said that only those with the permission of the Department of Forestry could enter the permanent forest reserve.
