Dept to revamp Islamic college in Penang

The Penang Islamic Religious Department (MAINPP) will be taking measures to improve Kolej Islam Teknologi Antarabangsa (Kitab), which has been given a “less than satisfactory” mark by the Auditor-General’s Report.

Kitab is managed by Usaha Tarbiah Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (USTB), a company under the MAINPP.
The department’s chairperson, Salleh Man, said USTB’s board would be revamped and new directors would be appointed.
“They would comprise academic experts and leaders who have the calibre. They will be appointed soon,” said Salleh, who is PAS Permatang Pasir assemblyperson.
“The main campus of Kitab which will be bigger, more comfortable, sophisticated and more suitable with the current academic needs, is being studied and will be implemented, he added.
Salleh (left) said MAINPP appreciated and welcomed the views and suggestions to improve the Islamic religious institution so that it can continue to be strong and successful.
Kitab wants to achieve the vision of an institution that is based on the concept of Islam for the well-being of the Muslim community, said Salleh.
“This is our joint responsibility,” he added.
Kitab is part of the the main focus of MAINPP, and a workshop to discuss the direction of MAINPP from April 6 to 8 has outlined three main focuses of the organisation.
“The focuses include organisational development, and improving the management of wakaf land and mosques,” he noted.
Salleh was referring to the Audit Report which found that the seven-year-old Kitab, operating along Jalan Air Itam, Penang, employs lecturers who are teaching without permits and provides unaccredited diploma programmes.
The report also found the financial and corporate governance performance of UTSB on the whole as “less than satisfactory”.
The report also found accreditation of courses a problem at Kitab, where three out of five diploma programmes obtained only ‘provisional’ accreditation from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
No application was made to gain accreditation for the three degree programmes, the Audit Report noted.
