Selangor's opposition is disappointed that three out of four of its motions have been rejected for debate in the state assembly today.

Opposition leader Shamsuddin Lias (Umno-Sg Burong) said among these were motions to debate the power of the Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (Jais) and the use of 'Allah' by non-Muslims.

"I am truly disappointed because the issue needs to be raised for the good of the peope, and because of the polemics in the media," he said when met at the Dewan Negeri lobby today.

According to a source in the state government, the two motions were rejected because the matter was still pending appeal in court.

The issue of Jais's powers has been a prickly one, with the law implying it is under the purview of the sultan.

However BN leaders continue to blame the Pakatan state government for both allowing Jais to act against non-Muslims on the one hand, and for not supporting the state ban on 'Allah' on the other.

Shamsuddin added that their motion on Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) was also rejected because it was pending Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency's (Selcat) report after a probe.

"Only one of our motions was accepted, on opposition towards the NGO coalition Comango," he said.

Wan Azizah 'not seeking higher post'

On another matter, Shamsuddin said the Kajang by election was meaningless and did not bring any change to the state assembly as it only resulted in a change in the state rep.

"They tried to change the MB and cause trouble, but the by-election only resulted in a change of the Adun and was a waste of money," he said.

The state government, he said, should instead give its attention to developing the state for the good of the rakyat.

Earlier today, the newly elected Kajang assemblyperson Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (above) was sworn in to the Dewan before speaker Hannah Yeoh.

The oath-taking took place at 10am in the presence of Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim state secretary Mohammed Khusrin Munawi.

When met at the lobby, Wan Azizah said she vows to do her best as a state rep to repay the support of Kajang voters.

She added that she was content to serve in that capacity alone, and is not seeking a higher position in the state administration.

"Like I said before, position is not important. What is important is service," she said.
