Malaysians must be vigilant and scrutinise the ongoing electoral redelineation process, which can be subjected to gerrymandering, despite the media attention on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and kidnappings in Sabah, said the DAP.
 
It's secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said that if Malaysia's electoral system was not fixed, Malaysians would not be able to adequately express themselves at the ballot box.
 
"The whole world can see for themselves the competency level of the Malaysian government from these two crisis, but only Malaysians shall determine whether (BN) is fit enough to rule. 
 
"If Malaysians want their vote to count and to bring about change, an independent, free and fair Election Commission (EC) is critical to ensure there is no gerrymandering in the redelineation exercise," he said in a statement today.
 
Lim said the EC suffers from a trust deficit especially after its former chairperson Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman admitted to ensuring Malay political dominance during his tenure.
 
"Clearly Rashid, who has since joined the racist movement Perkasa, was gerrymandering the constituencies in favour of Umno," he said.

Integrity
 
In January, EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof had said in an interview said the redelineation exercise report will be tabled in the current Dewan Rakyat sitting which began in March.
 
However, to date, there has been no news on the redelineation process despite the current Dewan Rakyat sitting expected to end on April 10.
 
Lim also cited the the Electoral Integrity Project (EIP) by University of Sydney and Harvard University which ranked Malaysia's last general election just above Zimbabwe a 66th out of 73 general elections surveyed.
 
"If Malaysia is to improve on electoral integrity, public confidence must be restored by either the replacement of the entire EC with independent and neutral members, comprising of civil society, respected jurists and academics, that is acceptable to the opposition. 
 
"Or else adopt the People’s Tribunal’s  recommendation of establishing another agency similar to the UK Boundary Delimitation Commission to supervise the redelineation because the EC lacks integrity and independence," he said.
 
The People's Tribunal comprising of international experts, which put together by electoral reform group Bersih, last month released a set of recommendations to improve the country's electoral system.
