The prolong dry spell has forced Taiping and the nearby Kamunting to undergo a two-week water rationing starting yesterday, affecting 23,719 or three percent of 710,000 Lembaga Air Perak (LAP) account holders.
As LAP notices on the scheduled water distribution went viral and reached homes, residents made a beeline for pails and water containers at shops.
A plastic shop in Taiping sold 300 plastic containers priced between RM10 and RM45 since Wednesday, said shop assistant who identified herself as Nor Hasiah, 37.
"We did not raise the prices although we had sold twice as much. We will get more supplies if there is a further increase in demand," she told Bernama yesterday.
Restaurant operator Saniah Md Noor, 55, said she and her shop assistants scurried to store water in two tanks and bottles for cooking and washing dishes.
"I hope the water rationing will be lifted sooner than expected as it had been raining of late - already three times this week, including heavy rain for an hour today," she said.
Water level low
Yesterday, Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir said although it had been raining in Taiping of late, the three-month dry spell had depleted water supply at the Ayer Kuning Dam and Taiping Headworks water treatment plant.
He said the rain enabled Taiping Headworks to churn out 31 million litres of treated water daily from 21 million litres daily before, but the water level at the Ayer Kuning Dam was still low.
As the Ayer Kuning Dam capacity had dropped to 48 percent and could last for only 25 days, he said it had to cut down supply of untreated water to Taiping Headworks.
