'Don't cite MH370 to shop for defence assets'

The DAP's Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim and Stampin MP Julian Tan have reminded the government not to use the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 as an "excuse to go shopping" for new defence technology.

Determine why there are weaknesses in handling the incident, says the DAP.
The DAP's Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim and Stampin MP Julian Tan have reminded the government not to use the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 as an "excuse to go shopping" for new defence technology.
"Without any further investigation as to why there were weakness and failure in handling Flight MH370, all shopping activities to buy defence assets and satellite equipment are without basis and a waste of public money," they told a press conference at the Parliament lobby this morning.
They were commenting on a statement by National Space Agency (Angkasa) director Noordin Ahmad in Berita Harian yesterday.
He had said that better technology, including the RazakSat-2 satellite due to be launched in 2016, are important especially in light of incidents like the missing plane.
They said that “Google Earth has better special resolution” than the proposed RazakSat-2, which only has a spatial resolution of one metre.
RazakSat-2 will cost the government RM270 million but the MPs questioned the move to launch the new satellite even though its predecessor, RazakSat-1, had failed despite costing RM142 million.
“The whole RazakSat programme, has the potential to suffer losses up to RM1 billion,” they said.
