Kajang results out by 9pm on Sunday, says EC

EC secretary Abdul Ghani Salleh said today the announcement would not be later than 9pm so long as the polling and counting of votes went according to schedule.
The EC would make available 240 bottles of indelible ink to mark the index finger of voters on polling day, he told a news conference after visiting the early voting centre at Rumah Perkep at the Kajang district police headquarters.
“The amount (of ink) is similar to that used for the two previous by-elections, in Sungai Limau, Kedah, and Kuala Besut, Terengganu,” he said.
The Kajang constituency has 39,278 voters, including the 1,197 police personnel and their spouses who voted early today.
Abdul Ghani said that by 11am today, 560 or 45 percent of the total number of early voters had cast their ballots at the three polling centres, at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hall of the Royal Malaysia Police College; the Anjung Forensics Hall of the Royal Malaysia Police and the Kajang district police headquarters.
“We have 24 EC personnel at the three venues to monitor the voting. Seven bottles of indelible ink have been made available for the early voting,” he said.
Abdul Ghani said the early voting began at 8am and would end at 4.30pm, after which the ballot boxes would be gathered and sent to the Bangi police station for safe-keeping.
“The votes will be counted after polling on March 23,” he said.
The Kajang by-election is a straight fight between MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun of the Barisan Nasional and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The by-election has been necessitated by the sudden resignation of the assemblyperson, Lee Chin Cheh of PKR, apparently to pave the way for PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to contest and reportedly become the next menteri besar of Selangor, replacing Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
However, the conviction and sentencing of Anwar to five years’ jail by the Court of Appeal, which overturned a High Court decision acquitting him of sodomy, had made the opposition leader ineligible to be a candidate.
