BN candidate for Kajang has blamed the death of six people due to drug abuse in the recent Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) in Kuala Lumpur to the Selangor government's failure to curb social ills in the Pakatan Rakyat state.

"The recent deaths due to drug abuse at the FMFA reflect the failure of the Pakatan state government in managing social problems in their state.

"I regret that six innocent young lives have been lost at the music festival which was held at Bukit Jalil stadium, and I am also saddened by the fact that this could have been avoided if only Pakatan had been more effective in implementing their policies," Chew Mei Fun said in a statement today.

According to Chew, BN froze all applications for massage parlours when it administered Selangor in 2006, but claimed the number of massage parlours drastically rose from 800 to 3,200 after the opposition took control in 2008.

She also alleged the hike in illegal cybercafes in the state outnumber licensed cybercafes "three to one".

"It is clear the numbers of illegal massage parlours, cybercafes and entertainment centres have increased under Pakatan. This is one of the reasons for Selangor’s deteriorating social values," she added.

Chew further asked why Pakatan is allowing this to happen as they sit and watch.

Meanwhile, Seri Setia state assemblyperson Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has urged Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz (right) and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to take responsibility for the incident.

Nik Nazmi said that the festival had the backing of the Tourism and Culture Ministry, while Khairy had given permission for the use of the venue.

"Nazri and Khairy cannot escape from the blame as Nazri launched the event last year, while Khairy agreed to (organiser) Iqbal Ameer meeting him.

"They should investigate the event that was organised there, since Khairy himself agreed to it then realised that the revellers in the electronic dance music or trance used drugs," he added.

It was reported that the concert was cancelled on the final day, last Saturday, by the authorities, following the deaths and 14 injuries as a result of the abuse of the drug methamphetamine, a neurotoxin and potent psychostimulant.

Yesterday, Khairy (left) was quoted by national news agency Bernama as saying that conditions to hold concerts would be tightened following the incident.

"The ministry will study from all aspects, including the organiser of such events in the country, to ensure they are free from drug abuse and vice.

"We will never allow this incident to pass like that, with the potential of recurrence," he said.

Khairy also said that he had met with Iqbal and had reminded him to first get the necessary approvals from the Malaysia Stadiums Corporation.
