Muhyiddin reveals rebooted SBA

The School Based Assessment (SBA) will no longer require teachers to key in data online, but instead file in data for their own records at a time of their convenience, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

In announcing details of the rebooted SBA at a press conference in the Parliament building today, Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said the new system would reduce the burden of teachers by at least 80 percent.
Teachers have voiced dissatisfaction over the SBA system, which they said was burdening them heavily, and a protest was held in February, resulting in the system being discontinued pending improvements.
"Teachers can record the students' performance according to their own timing and their own methods," Muhyiddin said.
The new revamped SBA will be rolled out on April 1.
The SBA was introduced in 2011 to eventually abolish the Standard Six UPSR and Form Three PMR examinations, which are crucial elements of the National Education Blueprint.
However, to date, uncertainty remains as whether the examinations will be abolished.
In an immediate reaction, Suaru Guru Masyarakat Malaysia working group chief Mohd Noor Izzat Mohd Johari said there are three components in the SBA which are slated from improvement namely the Standard Performance Document would be replaced with Guide to Monitor Students’ Progress forms, the removal of Students Development File and the abolishing the online SBA system.
“It cannot be denied that this three components have been the problem to implement SBA. However, I feel these are not improvements but directed to hide the weakness of the SBA system.
“As with replacing the Penilaian Menengah Rendah system abolished last year with the Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3), has a study been conducted on the PT3? For me I can foresee problems as the ministry is only addressing reducing the workload of the teachers but not the performance of the students,” he said.
What is done by the minister, Noor Izzat said is to hide the deficiencies and not an improvement and he reiterated the proposal for an in-depth study to be conducted before implementing something new for education.
