The Penang Water Supply Corporation  (PBAPP) said the water supply for the state is above the critical level and does not plan to implement rationing.

However, it will continue to monitor the water level in three major dams and provide information to the public on a weekly basis, PBAPP said in a statement in George Town today.

The water level in Air Itam Dam was at 67.3 percent capacity, Mengkuang Dam (40.2 percent) and Teluk Bahang Dam (83.9 percent).

The water level in Mengkuang Dam was lowered at the request of the Water Supply Department (Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry) to facilitate upgrading of the dam.

The Mengkuang Dam expansion project is scheduled for completion in July 2016. The cost of releasing water from Sungai Muda in Kedah will be borne by the ministry.

“The water level in Sungai Muda yesterday was at 2.42 metres, a good level for PBAPP to take water from the river to meet about 80 percent of the daily water needs in Penang,” said the statement.
