PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy conviction has nothing to do with the BN or the federal government, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.

Muhyiddin, who is also BN deputy chairperson, said that this is as the judiciary is independent.

“The court system is independent, has nothing to do with the government, it was a normal trial process. The rakyat knows this...

“Anwar’s conviction has nothing to do with BN,” he said, referring to last Friday’s conviction which disqualified Anwar from contesting in Kajang.

This has led to PKR president and Anwar’s wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s candidacy today against BN’s Chew Mei Fun in a straight fight.

It has also halted PKR’s Kajang Move, a plan to send Anwar to the state assembly to purportedly defend the PKR-led state government from BN.

The Move was set in motion by PKR incumbent Lee Chin Cheh’s resignation on Jan 27, and was widely seen as a way to oust Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

While Wan Azizah’s candidacy has turned away the numerous individuals who earlier wanted to contest as Independents, it has given BN yet another bullet.

Using the new ammo, BN Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (right) said that PKR had “abused” (cabul) democracy by nominating Wan Azizah.

“This has now become a playground for Anwar and his family,” she told reporters at the Kajang by-election nomination centre in Bangi.
