I have been reading the newspapers on the underutilisation of MyKad lately. I think it's a commendable effort by the government to implement a one-card system (which I believe is one of its kind in the world) by using sophisticated technology.

However, in its obsession to compete with modern Western countries by having the tallest building, biggest flag pole, etc, the government has fallen short in giving its citizens sufficient information on certain matters such as the MyKad.

As far as I feel, the government has been feeding us with one-sided information. We were told about the positive effects of MyKad only; how our lives would be so much more convenient by using this one-card system.

Is this card really that perfect that there should be no flaw at all? Well, I for one, am doubtful.

I recently booked a concert ticket at Genting Highlands through the phone. The ticketing counter asked me for my MyKad number. I was a bit surprised but was immediately consoled by the thought that they needed it for identification when I pick up the tickets later.

This consolation did not last long because as soon as I gave him the numbers, he immediately reconfirm my full name and home address without having me revealed anything. I have not booked any ticket from Genting before, neither have I stayed in any of their hotels. The only time I remember having gone there was when I was much younger, and MyKad has not existed yet.

The ticket sales person must have keyed the number in a database system and downloaded the information from there. I am very worried about this revelation because what would happen if we start putting our bank account details, international passport details, health details, etc, where do we draw the line?

Does the government know anything about invasion of privacy? If you value convenience more than your privacy, by all means use the card. Otherwise, I urge everyone to think and ask these questions.

Who else apart from the relevant authorities has access to this database? Why are they given this access? Who has given them this access? Are there any proper legislation to regulate this system; i.e, what happens when the information contained in MyKad has been abused? What is the status of the Personal Data Protection Bill (which is still being drafted)?

Can someone answer these questions; preferably the relevant authorities?
