The government must curtail pluralism in order not to confuse Muslims in the country, the Agong said today in his royal address to the first parliamentary sitting of the year.

He said the government must take action in order to prevent disunity among Muslims and asked the government to take action according to the sunnah wal jamaah (Sunni Islam) denomination.

"Stern action must be taken against the bad elements which try to influence the thinking and actions which are meant destroy our values," he said.

To that end, he praised the government’s establishment of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) to address issues of the national unity in the country.

The Agong’s address is consistent with the government’s recent stand to clamp down on Shiites in the country.

He also urged all MPs to express “undivided loyalty” to the country.
