I would rather hire one experienced hunter than 10 peasants to guard my farm. This analogy is best compared to the recent hasty decision of the government to expand our supposedly understaffed police force.

How many times have you seen a fit policemen who looks like he could take three men down on his own and I'll give you three times the occurrences of an overweight individual who actually needs his motorcycle to go after a running thief.

As a matter of fact, we all know that our police force is made up of mainly blundering and overweight individuals whose main care is the next bribe victim. Sure, a couple times a month we get nice pictures and stories on our daily papers singing praises of their success in nabbing criminals. Yet, compare these with the blunders they make, they don't break even.

Adding a few thousand more personnel and spending a few hundred million ringgit will not bring safety to the community but merely create more overweight individuals in a matter of time.

The solution lies in the force itself. Unless the force can cleanse itself from its own criminal activities (corruption, brutality, misuse of authority) no one (not even Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung) can claim this country to be a safe haven.

Maybe the government should make it compulsory for all personnel to attend a physical and psychological test on a yearly basis to ensure that we have only the best out there taking care of the rakyat's welfare.

Police procedures should also be updated to the point it is consistent with international standards. How many more Canny Ongs before we buck up? Quality is the key, not quantity.
