PKR has described Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM) chief P Waythamoorthy's proposal for the Kajang by-election to be the Indian community's referendum on BN as a pointless exercise.

"Clearly, Waythamoorthy ( right ) is only making an empty challenge that is meaningless to the fate of the Indian community.

"Why bother challenging a government that is obviously incapable and unwilling to help the Indian community?" said PKR's Kapar MP G Manivanan in a statement today.

"There is no use allowing Umno-BN to make false promises all over again towards the Kajang voters, especially the Indians, because their dismal track record has proven to have failed to solve the issues of the Indian community," he added.

Manivanan said BN's failure towards the Indian community was a given, and accused Waythamoorthy of trying to pull a "meaningless" stunt.

"Even Waythamoorthy himself had to resign from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's cabinet less than a month ago as Umno and BN has failed in uplifting the Indian community," he said.

Manivanan urged Indians to back Pakatan Rakyat, which he said has helped improve the community particularly in Selangor through the state's various schemes.

On Feb 10 Waythamoorthy resigned as deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department, citing the ruling coalition's refusal to uphold a pre-election memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with PHM on strategies to uplift the Indian community.

His departure from the cabinet has sparked a back and forth blame game with his former BN partners on who is at fault for the MOU's failure.

In his latest volley yesterday, Waythamoorthy urged Indians, who comprise 10 percent of the Kajang electorate, to use the by-election on March 23 as a referendum on how they viewed BN.
