DPM: Anwar an adviser to Selangor only in name

“He says he is the state economic adviser, but strangely he does not know what happened in Selangor. It means that he has never given any advice,” he told a press conference in Sungai Chua, Kajang, today.
He added that Anwar was only interested in the position, but did not care about the issue. Otherwise, his contribution to resolving it would have been known.
Anwar, who is an aspiring candidate in the by-election there, had said he was unaware of the deal until after it was signed.
It is also understood that PKR leaders were only told of the deal in the early morning on the day it was signed, just after midnight.
The deal allows Selangor to proceed with its takeover of four water concessionaires in the state along with a RM2 billion allocation from the federal government for this purpose, while the latter can go ahead with its plans to build the Langat 2 water treatment plant.
Muhyiddin (second from right) said he is relieved that the deal has finally been signed, and hopes that he plant will be supplying water to Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya in two to two-and-a-half years’ time.
To a question, he agreed that the move is Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim’s ‘checkmate’ against Anwar, because the deal is irrevocable although it is a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
He said both signatories obligations are clearly spelled out in the MOU, and “not a single word” can be altered even if Anwar replaces Khalid as menteri besar.
“Khalid may seem like he is not politically astute, but he is an expert, too. He knows what Anwar is up to,” he said.
The Kajang by-election on March 23 was engineered to place Anwar in the Selangor state legislative assembly.
It is also widely speculated that he would become the menteri besar if he succeeds, and he had been evasive when asked whether the speculation is correct.
Another Kajang by-election aspirant, Zaid Ibrahim, had claimed that one of the reasons Anwar wants to become the menteri besar is to influence Selangor’s water restructuring exercise, because he wants it structured differently from what Khalid had in mind.
