Where have we gone wrong with our priority for a plain, no-nonsense and basic social security? Recently, it was reported that a 28-year-old lady was abducted from Bangsar Shopping Complex, a posh location.

Those of us who frequent the place should also notice that there is hardly any security guard patrolling the multi-level underground car park. Previously, there were many reported cases of theft, targeting mainly those who left their computer laptop in the car. I was one of the victims although my computer laptop was locked inside the back compartment of my car.

This was not an isolated case, there were dozen other robbery and murder cases reported almost daily in the newspapers. Without a doubt, these cases, especially this abduction-cum-murder case should raise the alarm of security concern in many neighbourhoods.

Security is the most important element in ensuring a healthy neighbourhood which in turn is crucial in promoting a good environment for positive social development. Residents would expect that their properties and homes to be safe and secure from theft and robbery. Parents would like to ensure that their children are protected and safe while growing up in a neighbourhood.

Most of us appreciate the efforts taken by our law enforcers especially the police to eradicate social ills such as piracy, illegal VCDs, pornography and prostitution - dedicating almost 800 action teams daily to the various operations.

However, it is obvious that what the IGP Tan Sri Norian Mai needs to do is to get back to the basics of ensuring that the people feel safe and are safe living in their community and neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, we must work together and hope for the same enthusiasm showed by the police while raiding illegal VCD traders to curb all threats to our social security and weed out all elements of crime in order to create safe and healthy neighbourhoods for all. This should be the fundamental or basic responsibility of our security forces.

Lets hope the Canny Ong's case is the last and a good lesson to all of us for neglecting basic security needs.
