NUCC wants prompt action on threats to unity

The National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) has urged the government to act promptly against those who threaten national harmony.

In a statement today, it urged the authorities to uphold the rule of law and “actively promote national unity” by taking action against those who goad conflict.
This includes those issuing “incendiary statements and actions which are provocative and can lead to conflict and tension” which affect harmony and unity.
The NUCC lauded Malaysians who have take pro-active measures to promote peace and unity, as it believes that conflict resolution must be done through “community engagement”.
“As citizens with diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural identities, we must seek to address our differences with humility, reasonableness and fairness,” it said.
It announced that it will kick off its ‘Unity Dialogues’ roadshow on Feb 22 and will hold 18 town-hall meetings nationwide up to March 30.
The input from these meetings will be used to draft a National Unity Blueprint and will act to complement the federal government's reconciliation plans.
“The effort here is for NUCC members to go to the grassroots to hear views on national unity and inter-ethnic harmony in Malaysia,” the NUCC said, following its Feb 15 meeting.
“We would like to hear positive experience and stories of our achievement in ethnic relations. We also want to hear views on what has gone wrong and the current critical concerns
pertaining to national unity.
“At the same time we want to hear views pertaining to solutions and recommendations, especially as the way forward in strengthening ethnic harmony and making a Malaysia a better place for all Malaysians.”

Last month, the NUCC had said that it will attempt to host closed-door inter-faith meetings with religious groups, government agencies and community leaders “as soon as possible” to broker a peaceful settlement over the seizure of more than 300 copies of the Malay-language Bible in Selangor.
There has been no word as yet on these meetings, while the copies of the Bible have yet to be returned.
