Gerard Lourdesamy: Home MinisterAhmad Zahid Hamidi has said that it is all right to threaten someone with a slap but not to actually slap that person. So, is it also all right to threaten to slap the home minister, and the police will not take any action?
This is the height of political arrogance and stupidity. The offences of criminal intimidation and threatening behaviour are clearly spelt out in the Penal Code. Going by the home minister's reasoning, these offences are now redundant.
His statement confirms that in Malaysia, Umno and extremist Malay/Muslim NGOs are above the law, so long as they continue to provoke racial and religious incitement for the benefit of Umno's political survival.
We might as well become a lawless country.

Malaysiakini should compile the international coverage of the minister's preposterous statement. Hopefully, that will shame him and make him think twice before opening his mouth.

This has come about because during its continuous stay in power for more than half a century through fraudulent elections, it has taken complete control of all the institutions by putting in top positions unprincipled and immoral people who will do any crooked and illegal activity they are asked to do.
In a more vile dictatorship, like in Syria, the dictators will just kill anyone who opposes any of their wrongdoings.
But in Malaysia, the Umno dictators have kept the killing to a minimum but they try and turn over and neutralise their opponents by hitting at their rice bowl, by buying them over or by intimidating them.
Former PKR leader Chandra Muzaffar and Minister in the PM’s Department Paul Low are two good examples. Umno thus does not get such a bad name internationally and is able to continue stealing as much as it wants.
Winson Chang: Zahid, by saying there is no need to investigate, has committed the crime of obstruction of justice. The attorney-general should charge him for that.
