A mental health test on couples intending to get hitched is seen as the best way to reduce domestic violence.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim said as such, the ministry had no objection discussing with the health ministry on the best method to implement the proposal.
“This is a good proposal as there are couples with a history of mental illness, but the matter is not given attention due to love.
“If deemed suitable, the mental health test can be implemented along the line of HIV screenings for those about to wed.
“This means, if a couple wants to marry, all aspects have to be closely examined,” she said after visiting the Hematology Ward of the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching today.
Asked to comment on a newspaper report on the criminal trend of killing children below 12, Rohani did not rule out the possibility of mental problem in such incidents.
“Based on newspaper reports, there were cases committed by close family members such as parents and relatives.
“The focus of the ministry, via implementing agencies such as the welfare department and the national population and family development board, is to hold more programmes such as counselling, courses and forums related to family matters to strengthen family ties which are viewed as increasingly fragile,” she said.
Rohani said those keen to take part in such programmes could check with the nearest office, surf the website http://www.lppkn.gov.my or contact Nur Line 15999 for any query.
