Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today shot down PKR deputy president Azmin Ali’s challenge to him to contest the Kajang by-election against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Najib described the situation as an “internal PKR affair” and said he did not want to be dragged into it.

“This is not my problem, this is their (PKR) problem. I have no problem,” he said.

“Why deflect this matter to me?” Najib asked at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Department today.

After announcing his candidacy for the by-election, Anwar asked BN not to contest the seat, but Najib did not want to comment on whether BN would field a candidate in the by-election.

“The BN supreme council will make a decision,” he said.

“Let me look at all opinions before I make a decision. The meeting is only after Chinese New Year,” he said.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin had previously said that Umno should field its candidate in the by-election if MCA is unable to find a suitable candidate to stand against Anwar.

The Kajang by-election was called after PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh resigned on Monday, with Anwar announcing has candidacy one day later.

The move is believed to be with the intent of installing Anwar as the next MB of Selangor.

The seat has 48 percent Malay voters, 41 percent Chinese voters, and 10 percent Malay.

The Election Commission will announce the election and nomination dates on Feb 5.
