MCA will represent BN in the by-election for the Kajang state seat and MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon today reminded Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin to uphold the BN spirit.

“As the BN Youth chief, I hope that Khairy will respect the BN spirit and will behave.

“We have a unanimous goal, which is to capture Kajang, but (Khairy) should not have openly said that (BN) should not base (the candidate) on the old formula.

“He clearly stated that (Kajang) need not necessarily be contested by MCA,” Chong (left) told a press conference today.

He was responding to the statement by Khairy yesterday, in which the Umno Youth chief called on BN president Najib Abdul Razak not to follow tradition by letting MCA contest the coming by-election.

Instead, Khairy had said, Najib must look for the best candidate from among all the BN component parties.

PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh (right) resigned from his Kajang state seat two days ago.

Yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim announced that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim would contest the seat.

However, Anwar denied that he would replace Khalid as the menteri besar should he win, claiming that the by-election would help the party “optimise our performance in the state”.

Chong said MCA would put up its best member in this highly anticipated by-election and the candidate would be finalised soon.

Noting that MCA would be facing a very strong opponent, he stressed that “MCA must have the confidence if it chooses to contest”.

MCA, Chong pointed out, has had a record of winning in Kajang and it could still gain some support from the locals.

‘Anwar just wants to sell satay in Kajang?’

Chong slammed Anwar for abusing the democratic process to achieve his personal desire, which is to replace Khalid as the next Selangor menteri besar.

Although Anwar has denied this widespread claim, Chong said the reasons Anwar gave were weak.

He pointed out that Pakatan Rakyat won two-thirds majority in Selangor in the last general election by winning 44 seats because the performance of Khalid had received good feedback.

“Anwar has denied it (that he wants to be the MB), but then, does he really just want to sell satay in Kajang by contesting in Selangor by the way of creating a by-election?” he asked.

Chong also slammed Anwar, who is parliamentary opposition leader, for standing in Kajang simply to win with an overwhelming support from the Chinese voters in the constituency.

Therefore, he urged the Chinese voters in Kajang to punish Anwar with their ballot papers.

“I hope that the Kajang voters can use their ballot papers to punish Anwar because he is manipulating the election and democracy. The Chinese community will not always support him blindly,” he added.

Chong also hoped the voters in Kajang would give MCA a chance by electing a Chinese as the opposition representative of the people in the Selangor state assembly in order to check the state government.
