The Independent Advisory Panel to the transport minister today said that the evaluation report on the Genting Highlands bus crash on Aug 21 last year would be submitted to the ministry on Tuesday, Jan 28.
    
Its chairperson Lee Lam Thye in a statement, said that the six-member panel had finalised the report after conducting several meetings in the course of its work, besides making two visits to the crash site.
    
"In the course of its (the panel’s) review and evaluation of the respective reports from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) and other parties, the panel (had) sought clarification from the heads of 10 agencies and parties in relation to the bus crash," he said.
    
Lee added that he would issue a statement detailing some of the findings and recommendations of the panel, after presenting the report to acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein (right).

In the accident at KM3.6 of Jalan Genting Highlands-Kuala Lumpur, 37 people were killed while 16 others were injured. It was reported as the worst ever road tragedy in the country.
    
Following the tragedy, Hishammuddin had announced the establishment of an independent panel under the ministry to gather specific details about the incident, as well as to be a platform for the public to channel information about it.    
    
Meanwhile, Lee noted that the report was prepared based on five terms of reference, which were:

1. To evaluate and review reports by Miros and other relevant agencies/parties;

2. To obtain further feedback and clarification from the relevant agencies/parties;

3. To make effective recommendations so as to avoid similar incidents in the future;
    
4. To propose a suitable framework that will monitor the implementation of the recommendations; and

5. To present the report to the transport minister.
    
The panel had been appointed by the minister on Oct 29 last year.
