PAS ulama chief Harun Taib dies

PAS's Dewan Ulama head Harun Taib died at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu at 12.17am today. He was 71.

He passed away at Sultan Nur Zahirah Hospital, Kuala T'ganu at 12.05am.

HSNZ director Tengku Ramlah Tengku Senik told reporters Harun died of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).
Harun was a four-term assembly of the Manir state seat in Terengannu. He won the seat in 1982 but lost it in the next election before being voted in again.
He held the seat until 2004.
He leaves behind a wife and five children.
Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, the information head of the dewan ulama, said the funeral will be held this morning.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang was among the top leaders of PAS who paid their last respects to him earlier today.
Jamil Khir: A big loss
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom described the Harun's demise as a 'big loss' in the Islamic struggle in Malaysia.
He said the late Harun had made many contributions, including making good recommendations to the government.
"In fact, I am made to understand he has a madrasah (religious school) that has produced many Islamic graduates and we appreciate the contributions he made," he told reporters after officiating at the national-level 'Muzakarah Haji' programme in Kuala Terengganu today.
Jamil, who earlier represented the government and Umno to pay his last respect to the late Harun at Markas Tarbiah Kubang Lembek near Manir, said political differences should not be used as a reason to split the Muslims in the country.
He said Prime Minister Najib Razak's directive to him that he should make a visit to pay last respects to the opposition leader was proof that Harun was a big hearted leader.
Meanwhile, Jamil Khir said Lembaga Tabung Haji would take firm action against any haj guides who tried to instigate pilgrims with political elements, including attempts to influence them to hate the government.
Tabung Haji viewed the matter seriously because the government had all this while done its best to ensure Muslims could perform Islam's fifth pillar smoothly and in comfort, he said.
