Party Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) is going on a countrywide roadshow and membership campaign to raise awareness about its battles on national issues.

The campaign, to last two-months from tomorrow, will see party leaders and members going around the 11 states of peninsular Malaysia, distributing leaflets, giving solidarity and support for local struggles, holding forums and lectures, popularising PSM’s newletter, Socialist, and increasing membership.  

Later phases of the campaign will include Sabah and Sarawak, based on the response from its peninsula campaign, the party said.

“PSM is normally known as a party fighting various struggles at local levels...

“What many people do not know is that PSM as a party is equally involved in many national issues, such as our campaign to 'Stop the goods and services tax' (GST).

“We also oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) agreement, we fight for free education, advocate a minimum wage law and fight to save the public hospitals," PSM's national chairperson Dr Nasir Hashim (above, right) said in a statement.

Nasir said the party also wants to erase negative perceptions that equate it with 'communism' or that it is anti-religious and anti-business.

Campaign kicks off tomorrow

For this purpose, PSM leaders will roll out a new campaign theme, ‘With the People in the Struggle’ (Berjuang Bersama rakyat).

The PSM roadshow that kicks off tomorrow, in Manjong, Perak, will end in Penang on March 23.

In the 13th general election last May, PSM contested one Parliament seat and three state assembly seats.

The only winner was Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, who retained his Sungai Siput constituency in Perak, which he won in 2008.

Formed in 1998, PMS was only registered as a political party in 2008, after a 10-year struggle to gain recognition.
