Property developer Castmet Sdn Bhd has denied discriminating against singer Marinatasha Isnariah Mustapar for wearing a 'tudung' at its event last Saturday, and has filed a police report saying she was unsuitable as a replacement singer.

The company said it did not mean to humiliate her for wearing a ‘tudung’. Instead, it said, it had earlier decided that she was not to be the entertainer promised by the band at its annual corporate dinner.

“Ms Marinatasha was just a replacement singer for the preview. The company’s representative noted that she was not suitable for our annual dinner show, the reason being the lady singer was to mingle and interact with the guests through rhythm and dance,” says the police report filed by Castmet’s representative, which was obtained via a Facebook page.

The lead singer should have been ex-Akademi Fantasia winner Farina, the report noted.

In the Jan 18 incident, Marinatasha (centre in picture) was  told to stop her performance at the Sime Darby Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

According to the singer, she was asked to get off the stage by a senior manager of the company because she wore a 'tudung'.

Castmet said it had on Jan 6 requested the entertainment provider to book a musical band that can “interact with the invited guests, i.e. dance and sing along with the guests”.

The company also objected to Marinatasha, who showed up during the preview performance of the band named ‘Rufus’ held for Castmet representatives on Jan 15.

The band was also told then who were the VIPs and guests and the type of songs deemed suitable.

“In short, to give a smooth and rugged entertainment to all guests,” it said.

Castmet said  Marinatasha showed up again, unexpectedly, on the evening prior to the event, and the event manager got the band Rufus to hastily accept the event’s emcee as the lead lady singer instead.

Subsequently, the original singer, Farina, turned up and agreed to perform, and the programme went on as planned, said the company.

However, Marinatasha, at a press conference yesterday spoke out against her discrimination, saying this was her first such experience after 12 years in the entertainment industry.

She said the manager also scolded her after the performance but paid her the contracted fee.
