Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican has been slammed for defending the two rallies by pro-Najib supporters who took a racial line against the kangkung theme flash mob organised by Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon.

"Reezal has completely disgraced and repudiated whatever his predecessor - former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi - stands for," said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

"Reezal has taken a racial stance. Pak Lah would never do such a thing," Lim added.

In an interview with Malaysiakini on Sunday, Reezal denied that Umno was behind the banner  declaring 'Because of DAP leaders mouth, May 13 happened... Want some more?" that the protesters carried at the Sunway Carnival Mall in Seberang Jaya last Saturday.

Some 600 protesters who had gathered outside the mall also demanded an apology from Lee.

Reezal, who is an Umno supreme council member, also said Lee had brought the matter upon himself as the act of feeding a replica of Najib with bundles of the leafy vegetable kankung was "a despicable" act.

'Their leaders joined the rallies'

"They were there (at the rallies)," Lim shot back.

"Their leaders gave speeches and joined the rallies. The rally on Sunday ended up with violence," he added.

At last Sunday's rally in Alma, also on mainland Penang, about 300 protesters burnt an effigy of Lee, spat and stomped on his photograph and several members attacked two men, whose identities are not known, claiming they uttered racists words.

Lim said Pakatan would not be cowed by Umno's threats of the May 13 racial riots repeating, nor by the "racist abuses" the protesters hurled at DAP supporters, including the party's senior leader Lim Kit Siang.

"We have faith in our Malay brothers and sisters not to accept such extremism and racism.”

However, Lim distanced himself from the mob, when asked if he, as head of state, would advice Lee not to repeat the act of stuffing kangkung into a replica of Najib, which sparked Umno's anger.

'Nothing to do with state government'

"It (flash mob) has nothing to do with the state government and the DAP was not involved, as it was organised by PKR," Lim said.

"We leave it to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to handle it. The question is, why did Umno drag us into it?" he queried.

Last week, Anwar said Lee was not the only one who ridiculed Najib as the entire nation was upset with the hikes in the prices of essential goods.

Anwar said the butt dance by pro- government supporters outside the residence of former Bersih coordinator S Ambiga in 2012 was worse than the flash mob.

Today, backbenchers of the Penang state legislative assembly, led by Air Itam assemblyperson Wong Hon Wai, threw their support behind Lee.

Lee, who is also state PKR information youth chief, said he would continue to attend any rally or event that opposes the price hikes plaguing the nation.
