Dense fog hits New Delhi, disrupting flights and trains

Dense fog has affected flight and train services in the capital as visibility level dropped to below 50 metres.
Around 31 trains en-route to Delhi were running late, while four were rescheduled.

“The visibility below 50 metres has been recorded at 5.30am Indian Standard Time of today at Amritsar, Ganganagar, Churu, Phalodi, Jaipur, Delhi Agra, Bahraich, Allahabad and Satna,” India’s Meteorological Department announced in a statement.
The dense fog climate is expected for the next two days, it said.
“As the visibility was reported to be low, flight operations have been hit,” Indo-Asian News Service reported, quoting an unnamed spokesperson of the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to the Northern Railway, around 31 trains en-route to Delhi were running late, while four were rescheduled, said the report.
Disturbance to movement of vehicles, train and aircraft in the northern region of India, especially New Delhi, is common during winter season amid the frequent occurrence of thick fogs that brings down visibility to dangerous levels.
Trains are often delayed or cancelled, while flights are rescheduled, diverted to nearby airports or aborted as well.
This winter season, Delhi recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius last month. This was the lowest in a decade.
Currently, the minimum temperature hovers between 8-12 degrees Celcius.
