The International Court of Justice has confirmed that a certificate from it recognising Noor Jan Tuah as the Malacca sultan is fake, said Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron.

He said the office of the Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka received a letter to this effect from the ICJ last September.

"Noor Jan's claims that he is the Sultan of Malacca are outright lies," he told reporters after chairing the state executive council meeting at Seri Negeri in Malacca today.

Recently, Idris (right) had received a letter from Noor Jan in which the latter demanded that he be installed as the sultan, claiming that the ICJ had recognised as such.

Noor Jan, 57, however, was detained by police at 10.50am yesterday at the Anjung Batu Jetty in Umbai just before he was to board a ferry to Pulau Besar allegedly to join his "subjects" for a certain ceremony.

Today, police obtained a four-day remand order on him to facilitate investigations into the matter.

BR1M handout face-to-face

In other developments, Idris said Malacca would go ahead and hand out the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) 3.0 face-to-face instead of crediting the aid amount directly into the bank accounts of recipients.

He added that 185,000 applicants had registered for the aid in the state and that elected representatives and government officials would be presenting the aid to recipients.

Prior to this, the federal government had announced that the money would be credited into the bank accounts of recipients so that they need not queue up for it.

The aid is to help the people in the lower-income brackets to cope with the rising cost of living.
