NFC sues Nurul, Saifuddin over Eco City claims

National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd (NFC) and its chairperson Mohamad Salleh Ismail have filed a defamation suit against PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

They deny that cow project funds were linked to the project.
National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd (NFC) and its chairperson Mohamad Salleh Ismail have filed a defamation suit against PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The suit was filed last month at the Kuala Lumpur High Court following the duo's press conference in March last year regarding the company's alleged purchase of eight units at KL Eco City for RM12 million.
Mohamad Salleh who is Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil's husband said the allegedly defamatory remarks implied that he was not trustworthy, a criminal, greedy, or using his wife's position to obtain profit.
The remarks made by the two also meant that Mohamad Salleh had used NFC money as collateral or support to get loans for the purchase of the condominium.
He said the statements also implied that he had used the people’s money to increase his wealth, and that he and the company had cheated or abused the government’s funds or the people’s money.
Mohamad Salleh in his statement of claim said the statements had affected his reputation, credibility and character as a person who had received a high education and a businessman.
He claimed that the defamatory words had resulted in him not being able to do his daily task as a husband, father and businessman in a normal manner as he has been defamed and criticised by the society.
The NFC chairperson claimed that his income from the business had been affected and said he also received emotional pressure and mental torture, and this had affected his health.
The defamatory words, he alleged, also had lowered his esteem and reputation in society.
As a result of this Mohamad Salleh is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages. He also sought an injunction to prevent the two from saying and publishing the same defamatory statements.
The case is fixed for case management on Feb 27 where Nurul Izzah and Saifuddin will have to submit their statement of defence. The matter came up before KL High Court’s Justice Hue Siew Kheng for case management today.
Mohamad Salleh and NFC are represented by lawyers Y Sheelan Samuagam and Wan Shahrizal Wan Ladin.
Sheelan also told reporters that Mohamad Salleh’s criminal breach of trust appeal has been fixed for Feb 25 at the High Court and the case management for the matter has been fixed for March 19.
It was reported last Nov 22, that Mohamad Salleh had failed to have his CBT charge struck out.
He was charged with dishonestly misusing funds amounting to RM9.7 million through four cheques to partly finance the purchase of two condominium units and transferring RM40 million into the account of the National Meat and Livestock Corporation Sdn Bhd.
