I am glad to see malaysiakini has some coverage of the destruction of the Baghdad's museum and library via Elizabeth Wong's column.

Perhaps it would be useful as well to cover the fact that the US has no plans to enumerate the number of Iraqi dead. We've kept pretty careful track of the every injury to Americans and including deaths, of course. Less good track here of what happened to Brits and Australians.

The news has done very little to acknowledge the extent of death and injury in Iraq though it is doing better now than in the first week or two when it wasn't even acknowledged.

But we have stated that as a matter of policy we aren't going to try to find a count of Iraqi dead. Surely we have a responsibility to do it. And surely the world press should cover the fact that we aren't doing it.

Enough notice of this refusal to acknowledge the Iraqi dead and perhaps there will be some change in that policy, just as we went from Donald Rumsfeld shrugging about the museum to us now saying we will search for the lost items, and a lot of press about how we are responsible for these two irreplaceable losses of the museum and the library.
