After waiting for many years, Penangites can now shop at Ikea without having to travel to Petaling Jaya.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today happily made the announcement, welcoming the new investment by Aspen and Ikano on a 245-acre development site in Batu Kawan.
"Ikea's entry into Batu Kawan is a vote of confidence for Penang and a boost to making Seberang Perai as the future choice for investment, tourism and habitat for sustainable living," he said at a press conference today.
"Penangites have waited for many years for Ikea to open for business (in the state). Penang is proud that Ikea has chosen Batu Kawan as the first store outside the Klang Valley," he added.
"With Ikea's presence, the state government hopes that the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) will succeed in its effort to make Batu Kawan a more attractive place for those from the island to live, learn, work and play," he stressed.
Lim (right) said the total land cost for the project is RM483,951,600 and payment is to be made within 60 months from the date of agreement.
A RM5 million non-refundable deposit has also being paid to the PDC, he added.
"The entire commercial and mixed development on the 245 acres are expected to be completed within 10 years from the date of agreement.”
The state government’s and PDC’s plans for Batu Kawan will receive an additional boost with this development, which will feature an intergrated shopping mall - anchored by an Ikea store by Ikano Pte Ltd - and mixed development offices and residences to be developed jointly by Aspen-Ikano (a joint venture company to be formed by Aspen Vision Land Sdn Bhd and Ikano Pte Ltd).
Also present at the announcement are PDC general manager Rosli Jaafar, Aspen group founder and group CEO M Murly, Aspen group co-funder and chairperson Nazir Ariff, executive directors Dr Lim Su Kiat and Lee Peng Cheong, and general manager Woo Kok Weng.
