Landslide, floods cause KL traffic to crawl

Traffic is at a standstill on Jalan Mahameru, Kuala Lumpur as a landslide near Bukit Tunku completely cuts off the road in the direction leading to Jalan Tun Razak.
Reports of the landslide started pouring into crowd-sourced Kuala Lumpur traffic update Twitter account @kltrafficupdate at about 6.30pm today.
New Straits Times reported that the incident occurred at 5.30pm in front of Wisma Tani.
Traffic is now being redirected via Jalan Parliament, while the opposite direction appears to be clear. A backhoe is shown in crowd-sourced pictures clearing the soil.
The landslide is causing slow traffic all the way to Jalan Bangsar.
Smartphone users feeding information to @kltrafficupdate also report flash floods throughout the city, affecting major roads like the Bukit Jalil Highway near Puchong, Jalan Raja Chulan, and Jalan Ampang.
Concrete barriers
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) will place 0.9-metre high concrete barriers at the hillslope where a landslide occurred along the Mahameru Highway this afternoon, reports Bernama.
Sentul Fire and Rescue chief Zahari Mohamad said the barrier will be installed in two layers, at the latest by tonight to contain further landslips.
"For tonight, DBKL will open only two KL bound lanes there and my department will be monitoring the situation from time to time.
"They will also make road realignments and according to geological experts, there is still earth movement," he told reporters at the scene.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib (left) said because of today's landslide, earth reinforcement work at the location which stated on Oct 7 last year and scheduled to be completed in March, would probably take much longer.
"Tomorrow, I will call the contractors concerned to discuss the matter and in the meantime, DBKL will install concrete barriers there which should be done in two hours," he said after making a visit to the location.
Checks found heavy machinery clearing the rubble to normalise traffic flow.
The landslide occurred at 5.20pm during a heavy downpour. However, no casualties were reported.
