Parishioners of the Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Klang have been urged to turn up for Sunday mass and not be cowed by a Muslim group which is set to hold a protest there.

The call was made by Klang MP Charles Santiago who said that the police have given assurance that there will be adequate security tomorrow.

"I call upon the parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes and members of all faiths to take advantage of police assurance and visit the church on Sunday morning as a form of solidarity against intimidation and fear mongering," he said in a press statement today.

He was referring to the Klang Muslim Solidarity Secretariat which said it will protest at a bus station near the church tomorrow.

Charles said that Klang Selatan OCPD Kamarul Zaman Mamat had in a phone conversation yesterday assured him that parishioners of the church will be able to perform their Sunday obligations without fear.

"...He indicated that all necessary security measure have been put in place to ensure that church-goers will not be intimidated nor threatened this Sunday.

"In fact he asked me to inform the public and parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes that adequate police personnel will be stationed to protect their safety," he said.

Tell S’gor Umno to back off

Charles also called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to instruct Selangor Umno not to instigate the matter, alleging the party is linked to the protest.

The Muslim group has announced its intention to protest after the editor of Christian publication The Herald insisted Christians will continue using the word ‘Allah’ despite prohibition by Islamic authorities.

Meanwhile, according to The Star, Selangor Umno appeared unsure if it too will join the protest tomorrow.

Selangor Umno chairperson Noh Omar said a decision whether the party will protest or not will be decided today.

“Who is holding the protest? Umno? If there is going to be one, we will let the public know,” he said.
